FORMATION OF cHEUNG chau |
Cheung
Chau is a good example of tombolo. Cheung Chau North and Cheung Chau South were
two separate islands in the past. However, with the effect of sea waves and
winds, they carried rocks and pebbles on the shores. After a long time,
sandspits were built along the coast on both north and south islands. A century
after, sandspits on both side meet each other and join the two island together
as tombolo.
After the tombolo was formed, people continue to build up the natural formed tombolo in order to prevent it from the threat of tides. Therefore, the tombolo was not a simple pathway anymore but a main area with shops and houses. Since the tombolo is not a good foundation to load tall buildings, people there can only build houses with maximum 4 storeys. The northern part and southern part of the island are broad and wide while the central part is long and narrow. Therefore, it is also called ‘Dumbbell Island’ because of its dumbbell shape. |
